Sealants

What are sealant?

  • Sealants are thin resin coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.
  • By covering the chewing surfaces of teeth, sealants protect the tooth surface by keeping decay causing bacteria out.
  • Sealants are applied in liquid form and quickly harden.

Importance of placing sealants

  • The chewing surfaces of back teeth are rough and uneven because they have small pits and grooves.
  • Bacteria can stay in the pits and grooves which can not get cleaned by toothbrush bristles.
  • These bacteria can create decay in mouth.
  • To prevent decay formation sealants are placed in milk as well as permanent teeth.
  • Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in the mouth, before decay attacks the teeth.
  • Teenagers and young adults without decay or fillings in their molars also may get sealants.
