Sealants
What are sealant?
Sealants are thin resin coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.
By covering the chewing surfaces of teeth, sealants protect the tooth surface by keeping decay causing bacteria out.
Sealants are applied in liquid form and quickly harden.
Importance of placing sealants
The chewing surfaces of back teeth are rough and uneven because they have small pits and grooves.
Bacteria can stay in the pits and grooves which can not get cleaned by toothbrush bristles.
These bacteria can create decay in mouth.
To prevent decay formation sealants are placed in milk as well as permanent teeth.
Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in the mouth, before decay attacks the teeth.
Teenagers and young adults without decay or fillings in their molars also may get sealants.
